One would think that the Alioto surname originated near the city of Palermo in the small towns of either Sant' Elia or Porticello. But, surprisingly, the name originated from the small towns of Ali Terme and Ali Superiore, a good 150 miles east of Sant' Elia and Porticello on the island of Sicily. These small towns are also located 16 miles from the main port of Messina on the eastern ege of Sicily. There are not many clues as to why the Alioto family clan migrated to the west, but my thinking would be that the fish industry was much more prosperous on the shores of San't Elia.

These are the descendants of Giuseppe and Stefana Alioto. The photo above is of the six Alioto brothers from San Francisco, California (circa 1925). The brothers include: (back row standing left to right) Ignacio, Giuseppe, and Francesco. The middle row includes Nunzio and Giovanni. All by himself in front is Salvatore.
Our Alioto family emigrated from the small town of Sant’ Elia, Sicily, just 10 short miles east of Palermo during the early part of the 1900’s. There were 7 brothers and 1 sister who left the shores of
Sometime after he came to America and after working for the Paladini Fish Company, Giuseppe, the son of Giuseppe and Stefana, began the San Francisco International Fish Company. Giuseppe’s son, Joseph Alioto, served as mayor of San Francisco from 1968 until 1975. Ignacio worked for and became president of the Consolidated Fish Company. Salvatore worked for and became a manager at the Consolidated Fish Company. Mariano worked with his brother, Giuseppe, in the fish business before dying at the young age of 23. In 1941, our great-grandfather, Frank, started up the F. Alioto Fish Company with his sister Annetta’s husband, Tom Lazio. Giovanni became a lawyer who worked for the Northern California fisheries. Nunzio started one of San Francisco’s most famous restaurants – Alioto’s.

This photo was taken in 1961. Standing in the back row from left to rigth are Francesco, Salvatore, Ignacio, and Giuseppe. Sitting are Annetta Alioto Lazio and her husband, Tom Lazio.

The Alioto family is from Sant' Elia, which is about 10 miles east of Palermo, the capital of

Updated May 7, 2012 - I cannot believe it has been a year since I added anything new to this site. Today, I uploaded my great-grandmother's "cookbook" to the site. You can find it under the Francesco Alioto tab at the top of the page.
Updated April 11, 2011 - I have done some changes to this page, as you can see from the banners and the search engines. These are just added bonuses to all that is provided on this site. I have also included a short "blurb" as to where the name Alioto originated from. Thank you, Tony Alioto, for your information on this matter! I have deleted the "Open Forum" since the page was not working properly. I may try and start another Open Forum page in the near future.
As of April 11, 2011, I have added about 300 more names into a massive family tree that was started by Peter Bellanti. It is an amazing resource that includes more than 10,600 names which I hope to have edited and updated by this summer. In order for you to access the massive family tree, you will need to have Family Tree Maker (see above banner). If you would like to know more about this family tree, please email me. My email link is located right above the Alioto fish sign towards the bottom of this page.
March 22, 2011 - It has been a while. Here I am, at 3:15 in the morning, thinking of something to write to express my feelings about the loss of one of our cousins, Joey Alioto of Alioto's Restaurant in San Francisco. He was 59 years old. My family sends their heartfelt condolences to his wife Judy and his children, and their families. God bless Joey.
Here is a link to the sfgate.com article about Joey:

Updated December 7, 2010 -- It is fitting that I edit this website 69 years to the day of the attacks on Pearl Harbor. Families were changed forever on that fateful day as many of our young men went off the war figthing tyranny and evil. My uncle, John Canepa, served as a Paratrooper in the European theater and was there on D-Day. My grandfather, Mario Alioto, served on the Coast Guard protecting our borders from the "insidious evil". I wish to honor all our loved ones who faithfully and honorably serve now or before in any branch of the military.
Thanks for visiting my new website! Please enjoy! I am hoping to get more pictures from cousins as soon as they send me more! I would like to expand this website as much as I can in order to help "spread the love" I have learning more about the history of my extended family.
If you have any questions, comments, or anything to add to the photos on any of the pages, please feel free to email Mario at
